5th grade students: Please choose one of the following activites to complete.
There are currently 3 different types of activites to choose from. Within each activity you have a choice of images to discuss, just choose ONE. READ through all of the activites before you make your choice.
A. Compare and Contrast B. Step into the painting C. Reading an Image: What am I thinking?
A. Compare and Contrast
Please compare and contrast two famous paintings using the Venn diagram above to print.
Hmmm, what to compare??
1. What type of art work is it? (portrait, landscape, sculpture, still life, self portrait)
2. What style of art is it (realistic, abstract, non-objective....)
3. Think about how the artist used the elements of art, compare how they used: (click orange words = hyperlink) color line texture shape (organic or geometric) value form
Analyze- Which of the two paintings of your comparison do you like the best, why? How does it make you feel? Does it make you think of anything, or another painting?
Sketch- Do a quick sketch of your favorite on the back of your Venn diagram paper.

B. Step into the Painting...
Please reflect on one of the paintings. Use the handout above to print off and write your reflection.
Choice 1
I've seen this painting before!! Yes, or one very similiar. Do you remember the artist, time period, or style of art?
The artist has invited you, the viewer, into the the painting by having the path lead right up to us.
Pretend that you could walk down the path, far off into the background, and even to the space unseen. What might you see? Who might you meet? Who would you invite to go with you, why? Use your five senses and think about the entire experience (How you might feel based on the weather). Be sure to give detailed responses to each question.
Choice 2
I've seen this painting before!! Do you remember the artist, time period, or style of art?
Pretend that you could walk down the streets of the town, far off into the background, and even to the space unseen. What might you see? Who might you meet? Who would you invite to go with you, why? Use your five senses and think about the entire experience (How you might feel based on the weather, or what might you hear?...). Be sure to give detailed responses to each question.
C. Reading an image: What am I thinking?
Do you recognize photo A? These are two photographs from Dorthea Lange, a famous photographer during the Great Depression. We had a discussion about her work during our lesson on Grant Wood and Regionalism. Open the link by clicking her name (in orange) to learn more about her.
Print off the handout below to complete this activity
For this activity you have the role of both interviewer and person, or persons, in the photo. Think of atleast 3 questions to ask and then answer. To help with this, think about changing places with them, what are they experiencing, eating, sleeping??
In addition, answer these questions-
1. How are you like the people in this photograph?
2. How are you different than the people in this photograph?
3. What do you think is going on around them, if you could see a photo of the entire area, what else might you see?
